Description:
This project will provide training to first responders about strategies to safeguard Canadians’ health and safety and to reduce deaths and injuries related to hazardous materials (HazMat) including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) materials. These activities will enhance HazMat response capabilities in Canada, leading to a safer, more resilient Canadian society.

Expected Results:

Immediate outcomes: Canadian firefighters and other first responders acquire the skills and knowledge to effectively respond to HazMat incidents, with improved national interoperability among trained responders. These outcomes will be achieved through the delivery of 60 HMO courses to approximately 1,500 participants over three years, including Pro Board certification for those who meet passing requirements.

Intermediate outcomes: Canadians, as well as firefighters and other first responders, are better protected during and following HazMat incidents. These outcomes will be achieved through the same training delivery, with a target that at least 15% of participants represent non‑firefighting disciplines.

Long‑term outcomes: Reduced HazMat‑related injuries and illnesses among responders and the public; increased community preparedness and environmental protection; and enhanced public trust in HazMat response capabilities. These outcomes will be supported through annual instructor recertification and annual HazMat Advisory Board meetings to ensure training remains current and effective.
