Description:
This project addresses the Indigenous SAR priority by not only enhancing engagement with, and fostering inclusion of, Indigenous peoples, but goes above and beyond to provide capacity building, peer mentoring, and leadership training. Specifically, Inuit coordinators in the 3 project communities will be trained in satellite imagery interpretation, map development, meeting facilitation and project management, all transferable skills that support the National Search and Rescue Program and community development in general.

Expected Results:

• Reducing the demand on SAR resources for these particularly high-risk communities in Nunavut;
• Adoption of the project protocol for integrating Indigenous SAR knowledge into Emergency
Management Programs and Practices across the Canada North;
• Empowering communities with their own knowledge and building capacity for communities to
engage in their own climate change solutions; and
• Demonstrating to communities the benefits of combining technology (e.g., satellite imagery)
and Inuit knowledge to support safe travel.

Program Purpose:

The SAR NIF contributes financially towards projects that improve and enhance the objectives of the National Search and Rescue Program (NSP).

To achieve this, SAR NIF funding is provided for projects that:
•enhance the effectiveness of SAR response in federal, provincial and territorial jurisdictions;
•promote the sharing of response and prevention best practices throughout the SAR community; and,
•promote and improve SAR prevention.
