Description:
Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) is experiencing safety and wellness issues which continue to overload service providers and the community in responding effectively and efficiently. In support of the safety plan, the community will engage in the creation of an Elders Circle, youth group, language and culture land based camp and interagency forum. These activities will support community development to increase their safety capacity. The target population will include: children, youth, young families, Elders, seniors and other members of the community. Band administration, Elders group, health department and the safety advisory will be responsible for delivering activities monthly over the course of the 11 months. Project activities will be led by a coordinator who will be responsible for organizing the proposed activities and interagency support.

Expected Results:

Will support on-going wellness concerns; Reduced child apprehension rates and family breakdowns; Group discussion, engagement and gatherings to increase knowledge and awareness on language, traditional teachings, family and community connectedness around and safety; Leadership engaged with youth and broader community, awareness of alcohol & drugs through social media campaign. Increased levels of engagement with community members; Increased awareness, knowledge and capacity to respond to trauma and healing; The transmission of language and traditional knowledge ensuring the preservation of the culture-language; Interagency collaboration will allow for greater outreach and efficiencies in supporting safety and wellness.

Aboriginal Community Safety Development Contribution Program (ACSDCP)
Program Purpose:

This program provides contributions to Aboriginal organizations (on and off-reserve), Aboriginal governments and municipalities in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations and or communities to develop tailored approaches to community safety that are responsive to the concerns, priorities and unique circumstances of Aboriginal communities. Becoming more responsive requires engaging Aboriginal communities in identifying issues and developing solutions; building the capacity of Aboriginal communities to develop and deliver projects; addressing funding issues; and ensuring that relevant programs are adaptable to the diverse needs of Aboriginal communities.
