Description:
The purpose of this project is to expand the “wear your lifejacket” message campaign to bring critical information and resources direct to the residents in 20 communities across northern Ontario. This will be done by developing and delivering, while working with the Canadian Rangers, a comprehensive, culturally sensitive educational program. The program will include components such as: cold water awareness, re-boarding, lifejacket availability, Lifejacket Owner program and a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) program.

Expected Results:

Immediate Outcomes:
- creation of promotion of culturally sensitive knowledge materials for the north;
- larger number of instructors able to deliver the program; and
- increase knowledge in northern communities about cold water immersion and the importance of life jackets.

Intermediate Outcomes:
- increase lifejacket wear and more installations of re-boarding devices;
- increase lifejacket availability; and
- PCOC designed for the north.

Long Term Outcomes:
- fewer drownings
- fewer SAR incidents
- fewer deaths due to hyperthermia
- acceptance of a northern-adapted PCOC program
