This 30-month project will support a feminist response and recovery from the current impacts of COVID-19, through systemic change. Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre Inc. will achieve this by building a research and training institute led by Indigenous women. This organization will develop the research, evaluation, and ethics frameworks; identify community research priorities; and create a women’s leadership governance structure that focuses on utilizing Indigenous knowledge and the strengths of community.
At the end of the project, the organization will have contributed to addressing systemic barriers by increasing networks and collaboration to accelerate systemic change and supporting positive distribution of authority, voices, and decision-making power to support women’s equality.
The Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres will support the development of the organizational structure and research framework. Additionally, Two Spirited People of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Indigenous Executive Circle will provide guidance as required. Finally, the organization will partner with existing Indigenous research institutes, including Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing at the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg Kishaadigeh, and Research Manitoba for knowledge transfer and collaboration purposes.
