Description:
This 30-month project will develop and implement training for journalists on the responsible reporting of gender-based violence (GBV) and gendered issues in the media to address the root causes of gender-based violence. Women's Place (St. Catharines & District) Inc. will achieve this by performing baseline research of local media reporting on GBV; consulting and interviewing journalists, people with GBV lived experience, equity seeking groups (LGBTQIA2+, Indigenous, and racialized people, people with disabilities, migrants and newcomers) and experts on GBV; developing a training package which will include a journalist guide and a documentary; delivering training to target groups; performing pre and post-training interviews as well as follow-up research of local media reporting on GBV to determine training effectiveness. At the end of the project, the organization will have developed a promising practice that aims to promote gender equality and diversity in news media content; enhance news media capacity to appropriately and responsibly address GBV; and increase the representation of women and gender-diverse people as experts and leaders in news media. This project will engage with consultants to conduct research on region-specific gender representation and gender-based issue reporting in Niagara. This organization serves the North-west area of the region, their sister shelter, Women's Place of South Niagara, serves the South-east area of the region and will be integral in the delivery of the program to all media outlets in Niagara.

Program Purpose:

The purpose of the GBV Program is to strengthen the GBV sector to address gaps in supports for two groups of survivors: 1) Indigenous women and their communities, and 2) underserved populations (including women living with a disability, non-status/refugee /immigrant women, LGBTQ2S, gender non-conforming people and ethno-cultural women) in Canada. The Program provides grant and contribution funding to Canadian organizations to improve supports to help create long-term, comprehensive solutions at the national, regional, and local levels.
