Improving Institutional Accountability Project [Phase 2]
Agreement Number:
Agreement Value:
Agreement Date:
Jan 4, 2021 - Jan 3, 2024
This 36-month project will pilot and evaluate a Canadian-advocate designed model of case review of police investigations inspired by the Philadelphia Model with the aim of improving police response to sexual assaults. By working closely with frontline advocates, communities, and the police, the organization aims to improve police accountability and ensure transparency for sexual violence survivors and the public. With this objective, the project will support local communities to test the model, including through the provision of training, technical knowledge and tools, relational assistance with police services, and access to ongoing coaching. It will further lead the creation of an advocate community of practice in order to support reviewers and build consistency in advocate reviews across Canada. The project will also explore the feasibility of remote reviewing to increase the model accessibility.

Program Purpose:

The purpose of the GBV Program is to strengthen the GBV sector to address gaps in supports for two groups of survivors: 1) Indigenous women and their communities, and 2) underserved populations (including women living with a disability, non-status/refugee /immigrant women, LGBTQ2S, gender non-conforming people and ethno-cultural women) in Canada. The Program provides grant and contribution funding to Canadian organizations to improve supports to help create long-term, comprehensive solutions at the national, regional, and local levels.
