Description:
Through this 59-month project Nishnawbe Aski Nation Corporate Services (NAN) will increase its ability to address gender-based violence against Indigenous women, girls, 2SLGBTQI+ people in 49 First Nation communities within northern Ontario. This will be achieved by building evidence and knowledge by NAN to develop a GBV Strategic Plan that will guide future programming, policies and advocacy work. The project will engage NAN departments, NAN Advisory Councils, community members and local organizations with subject matter expertise. They will identify and secure training for NAN staff, build evidence and knowledge by completing an internal review, identifying existing services, programs, needs and gaps in the community, and develop an internal communication campaign. By the end of the project, Nishnawbe Aski Nation Corporate Services will have strengthened their capacity to address GBV against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people through the development of an informed NAN Corporates Services GBV Strategic Plan. With the Supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, Nishnawbe Aski Nation will 1) support NAN First Nations and leadership in developing community level GBV policies, 2) assist First Nations incorporating GBV considerations into emerging First Nation laws and jurisdiction, and 3) apply Indigenous methodologies for data collection and knowledge sharing to inform the final report.
