Description:
This 60-month project will enable the Regroupement des centres d’amitié autochtones du Québec (RCAAQ) to strengthen its capacity, along with that of its 10 affiliated Native Friendship Centres, to prevent and fight gender-based violence (GBV) against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people. Measures to achieve this will include having affiliated Centres document best practices in preventing and reducing GBV and proposing recommendations, designing and delivering appropriate training to workers and managers, and creating tools for the RCAAQ and the Centres to document, reflect upon and develop relevant approaches and services.
The supplementary funding provided to the organization will enable it to collect data to better understand the realities, needs, and concerns of the urban Indigenous population in Quebec – more specifically, those of Indigenous women – and to help member Friendship Centres in developing community plans to deploy services for Indigenous women and their families based on these portraits.
By the end of the project, the RCAAQ will have strengthened its capacity to prevent and fight gender-based violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people.
With the supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, the Regroupement des centres d’amitié autochtones du Québec will share the results of its extensive survey conducted in the first phase of the project related to gender and sexual diversity among Indigenous people in urban settings with a wider audience, will see the co-construction of new and harmonized strategies for two-spirit and LGBTQIA+ people and will develop a data governance policy on urban Indigenous realities in order to reduce risks and better measure returns. Through this, they will further advance gender equality.
