Medical violence experienced by trans and non-binary people

Through this 40-month project, TransEstrie will conduct research that will help improve healthcare and health services for at-risk groups in the area of gender-based violence. The project will help shed light on access to gender-affirming care in Quebec and on medical violence experienced by trans and non-binary people during the medical transition process. To achieve this goal, the predominantly qualitative research will include an analysis of data collected through an online questionnaire on gender-affirming care for people of gender diversity in Quebec, as well as interviews with healthcare professionals and people of gender diversity who have experienced an unpleasant event with a professional providing access to gender-affirming care. TransEstrie will release its results and analyses through a webinar and by publishing “open-access” articles to inform others about the research findings. With the Supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, TransEstrie will enhance its analyses, information products, dissemination and data access offerings. The research report and the scientific articles resulting from the project will also be strengthened. To allow for varied and accessible dissemination to different agents of change, an information guide will be produced on the AJUSTER project and proposed areas of action to improve identified issues. TransEstrie will disseminate the final products of the project at events and consultations, to ensure the current and lasting impact of the project. Finally, a framework for the offer of support for university students wishing to access the data from the AJUSTER project for their master’s or doctoral studies would be established. Through this, they will further advance gender equality.

Gender-Based Violence Program

The purpose of the GBV Program is to strengthen the GBV sector to address gaps in supports for two groups of survivors: 1) Indigenous women and their communities, and 2) underserved populations (including women living with a disability, non-status/refugee /immigrant women, LGBTQ2S, gender non-conforming people and ethno-cultural women) in Canada. The Program provides grant and contribution funding to Canadian organizations to improve supports to help create long-term, comprehensive solutions at the national, regional, and local levels.
