Gender-Based Violence: An Intersectional Perspective

Through this 49-month project, Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society will conduct research that will help improve GBV services for at-risk groups. It will address the gap in GBV knowledge about disabled Inuit women and girls in Nunavut, resulting in new ways of understanding GBV through an intersectional lens. To do so, the project will include sharing circles with people with lived experience across Nunavut regions. Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society, in collaboration with community partners and an advisory group, will draft a formal report to share information on the research findings. The report will be translated, offered in plain language, and made available to anyone interested. With the supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, the Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnsuaqtiit Society will conduct a workplace and economic-based GBV study, undertake an institutional ethnography of structural GBV, re-analyze existing qualitative data through a structural violence framework, and conduct interviews with service providers to examine systemic response capacity. Through these new activities, the organization will advance gender equality by addressing structural, economic, and institutional drivers of gender-based violence affecting disabled Inuit women in Nunavut. Through this, they will further advance gender equality.

Gender-Based Violence Program

The purpose of the GBV Program is to strengthen the GBV sector to address gaps in supports for two groups of survivors: 1) Indigenous women and their communities, and 2) underserved populations (including women living with a disability, non-status/refugee /immigrant women, LGBTQ2S, gender non-conforming people and ethno-cultural women) in Canada. The Program provides grant and contribution funding to Canadian organizations to improve supports to help create long-term, comprehensive solutions at the national, regional, and local levels.
