Mapping impacts of intersecting identities on GBV survivors’ experiences with the legal system

Through this 41-month project, The Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan (PATHS) will conduct research that will help improve GBV services for at-risk groups. By using participatory feminist research methods, PATHS will map the impacts of intersecting barriers for survivors of GBV in their interactions with the legal system and provide recommendations for improvements. To do so, this project will employ qualitative and quantitative research methodology, including a survey, focus groups and one on one interviews with GBV survivors who have experienced the legal system. PATHS will produce knowledge products such as infographics and an in-depth report that will be shared widely throughout PATHS’ networks and to government policy makers. PATHS will also share research findings through a webinar and conference presentations. The results of this research project will be utilized to inform the work of PATHS member agencies, other GBV services, legal services, and PATHS’ advocacy efforts. With the supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, the Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan (PATHS) will undertake in-depth analysis of data collected from a survey (n = 249) and focus groups (n = 67) conducted with legal system service providers, write additional journal articles/written briefs on topics arising from the findings and disseminate findings to GBV professionals. Through this, they will further advance gender equality.

Gender-Based Violence Program

The purpose of the GBV Program is to strengthen the GBV sector to address gaps in supports for two groups of survivors: 1) Indigenous women and their communities, and 2) underserved populations (including women living with a disability, non-status/refugee /immigrant women, LGBTQ2S, gender non-conforming people and ethno-cultural women) in Canada. The Program provides grant and contribution funding to Canadian organizations to improve supports to help create long-term, comprehensive solutions at the national, regional, and local levels.
