Understanding GBV experiences of immigrant, migrant, and other racialized women/gender-diverse peoples on PEI

Through this 42-month project, BIPOC USHR PEI Inc. will conduct research that will help improve Gender-Based Violence (GBV) services for immigrant/migrant women and other racialized women and gender-diverse peoples. It will address their experiences on GBV, the barriers experienced by the community, and their suggestions and advice on how to improve services, supports, and prevention interventions. To do so, the project will include consulting with community members to inform the project and collecting qualitative data with immigrant/migrant women and other racialized women and gender-diverse peoples who have experienced GBV. BIPOC USHR PEI Inc. will create a report, infographics, and a social media campaign to share information on the research findings. With the supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, BIPOC USHR PEI will expand its community-based research GBV on Prince Edward Island by examining youth knowledge and intergenerational learning related to consent and healthy relationships, as well as investigating how racialized communities navigate GBV support systems and referral pathways. Through youth engagement, stakeholder consultations, and community-based research, the project will generate new evidence about how knowledge of GBV is developed and shared across generations and how individuals access support services. The findings will inform the development of practical resources for youth and youth serving organizations as well as navigation tools that support improved access to GBV services. Through these activities, BIPOC USHR will further advance gender equality and strengthen community-based responses to gender-based violence in Prince Edward Island.

Gender-Based Violence Program

The purpose of the GBV Program is to strengthen the GBV sector to address gaps in supports for two groups of survivors: 1) Indigenous women and their communities, and 2) underserved populations (including women living with a disability, non-status/refugee /immigrant women, LGBTQ2S, gender non-conforming people and ethno-cultural women) in Canada. The Program provides grant and contribution funding to Canadian organizations to improve supports to help create long-term, comprehensive solutions at the national, regional, and local levels.
