Engaging Men and Boys as Allies in Preventing GBV Through Community-Based Humane Education Programming

Through this 42-month project, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (also known as Humane Canada) will collaboratively develop and put in place humane education programming to strengthen the GBV sector. To do so, the project will identify, adapt, and pilot humane education initiatives that show promise in engaging young men and boys as allies in ending GBV. An external evaluator will measure and assess the impact of community-based humane education programming as a promising practice towards addressing and preventing the root causes of violence. Humane Canada will share project outcomes through WAGE's GBV Knowledge Centre and key knowledge mobilization events for humane educators so others may replicate or expand upon the promising practice. An online community of practice, as well as a data and knowledge exchange hub, will support humane educators, and engage them in monitoring effectiveness. With the supplement, Humane Canada will implement additional activities to increase the project’s scope and reach. Specifically, they will expand the use of the promising practice framework to the prevention of online radicalization of young men. In addition, they will host a virtual knowledge exchange event to share the promising practices engaging men and boys in humane education. With the supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, Humane Canada will build on evaluation results and recommendations to address the needs for strengthened curriculum guidance, structured capacity, and continued learning integration. They will achieve this by re-activating their Humane Education Committee with added technical sub-group on GBV prevention; developing and enhancing tools for humane educators to deepen existing gender transformative and GBA+ approaches; and increasing knowledge mobilization within local and regional networks through a two-day on-line event and accessible online resources that support sustained prevention capacity. The external evaluator will continue to assess the impact of community-based humane education programming as a promising practice towards addressing and preventing the root causes of violence.

Gender-Based Violence Program

The purpose of the GBV Program is to strengthen the GBV sector to address gaps in supports for two groups of survivors: 1) Indigenous women and their communities, and 2) underserved populations (including women living with a disability, non-status/refugee /immigrant women, LGBTQ2S, gender non-conforming people and ethno-cultural women) in Canada. The Program provides grant and contribution funding to Canadian organizations to improve supports to help create long-term, comprehensive solutions at the national, regional, and local levels.
