Gikendamowin – A knowledge-gathering initiative centering the needs of the community we serve

Through this 26-month capacity building project, The Shine Network Institute will enhance their capacity to advance gender equality by identifying the needs and barriers Indigenous women are facing within the Canadian screen sector and creating roadmap solutions to addressing them. The Shine Network Institute will conduct a needs assessment, comprehensive data collection and analysis, to gain a detailed understanding of the barriers’ root causes and geographical differences. An Indigenous pedagogy policy will be created and implemented, informing the way Indigenous centered training and professional development is approached and focusing on culturally informed, accessible, and safe education and training within the organization. A strategic plan will also be developed and implemented, creating a pathway to deliver services adapted to the community needs and apply sustainable solutions, ultimately enhancing the impact and reach of the organization. With the Supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, The Shine Network Institute (TSNI) will implement a national awareness and knowledge mobilization campaign, conduct structured outreach to Indigenous communities and sector stakeholders, and collect and amplify video testimonials that humanize and reinforce the findings of the Gikendamowin project. Through these enhanced capacity-building and engagement activities, TSNI will increase awareness of systemic barriers facing Indigenous women in the screen sector, strengthening community-informed advocacy, and reinforcing sector accountability for equitable participation and leadership. Through this they will further advance Gender Equality.

The purpose of the Women’s Program is to advance equality for women in Canada by working to address or remove systemic barriers impeding women’s progress and advancement. The WP supports the Government of Canada’s goal of advancing gender equality in Canada. It is consistent with Government of Canada priorities related to economic prosperity, and supports Canada’s international commitments related to gender equality.
