-April 2023: Issued a statement on the detention of Wall Street Journal reporter, Evan Gershkovich.
-May 2023: Issued a thematic statement to commemorate World Press Freedom Day.
-May 2023: co-hosted Media Freedom Coalition workshops in New York and another event on the MFC's progress called "MFC Year in review". -May 2023: Presented the Canada-UK Media Freedom Award 2023 to Mada Masr, an independent media outlet in Egypt.
-June 2023: Ended Canada's term as co-chair of the MFC, with handover to Estonia on 1 July 2023.

  • March 2023: Issued a statement on International Women's Day 2023.
  • March 2023: Minister Joly presented pre-recorded remarks on media freedom at the Dutch regional event for the second Summit for Democracy.
  • March 2023: Canada succesfully concluded its role as co-lead of the Media Freedom Cohort of the Summit for Democracy, which resulted in 27 governments and 93 civil society groups, media, philanthropies, and businesses making over 120 commitments to advance media freedom around the world.
    -Co-led with the Netherlands the Mandate renewal resolution of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, adopted at session 52 of the Human Rights Council.

November 2022: MFC issued thematic statement on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. Minister Joly provided pre-recorded remarks at the high-level conference to commemorate the 10-year Anniversary of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity, held in Vienna, Austria. Canadian delegation attended the Safety of Journalists: Protecting Media to Protect Democracy conference in Vienna, Austria. December 2022: MFC issued a statement on Iran to call out its violent repression of freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. Canada virtually co-facilitated the Summit for Democracy's Media Freedom Cohort launch meeting and provided an overview and vision of the cohort. Canada also discussed potential deliverables in advance of the Second Summit for Democracy.

• The Media Freedom Coalition, Freedom Online Coalition, and International IDEA co-hosted a UN General Assembly High-Level Week side event on Upholding Democracy and Human Rights in the Face of Rising Disinformation on September 20th.
