The Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin was designed primarily as a reference volume documenting the subsurface geology of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. This GIS dataset is one of a collection of shapefiles representing part of Chapter 27 of the Atlas, Geological History of the Williston Basin and Sweetgrass Arch, Figure 6, Lithotectonic Basement Elements. Shapefiles were produced from archived digital files created by the Alberta Geological Survey in the mid-1990s, and edited in 2005-06 to correct, attribute and consolidate the data into single files by feature type and by figure.

This GIS dataset depicts the result of a geostatistical model of the bedrock topography in Alberta. This model is based on water-well litholog data, stratigraphic picks made on oil and gas petrophysical logs, data derived from digitized contour interpretations on bedrock topography maps, including bedrock outcrop locations and the 60 m grid-spaced Shuttle Rader Topography Mission digital elevation model. These data comprise the raster surface of Alberta Geological Survey Map 550, Bedrock Topography of Alberta, Canada.

All available bathymetry and related information for Astotin Lake were collected and hard copy maps digitized where necessary. The data were validated against more recent data (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission 'SRTM' imagery and Indian Remote Sensing 'IRS' imagery) and corrected where necessary. The published data set contains the lake bathymetry formatted as an Arc ascii grid. Bathymetric contours and the boundary polygon are available as shapefiles.

This dataset results from mapping the surficial geology, and sand and gravel deposits with aggregate potential in the McLennan area (NTS 83N). This shapefile shows where materials and geology were observed at natural outcrops, sand and gravel pits, hand auger holes, and excavations dug by a backhoe. The type, thickness and order of the observed materials are described in the attribute table. Map 536 is a PDF version generated from the shapefiles.

The first clue to the presence of possible diamond-bearing source rocks in northern Alberta was the discovery of a perfect octahedral diamond, estimated at about 0.83 carats in weight, by farm worker Einar Opdahl during 1958 in the Evansburg area of west-central Alberta. Since the Opdahl diamond, no new diamond finds were reported in northern Alberta until the 1990s, when several occurrences of alluvial diamond and diamondiferous kimberlite were discovered.
