Glacier National Park provides important habitat for a wide range of bird species. As the most diverse land vertebrates, birds are an important indicator of ecosystem health. Yearly data are collected at these sites using audio recorders to determine trends in diurnal avian species abundance by species. Data can provide a number of ecological indices such as the effects of land use and climate change.

This is a multi-park measure, which includes an inventory and assessment of 1,754 culvert and 51 bridge locations along the major highways and roads in Banff, Kootenay, Yoho, Waterton Lakes, Mount Revelstoke, and Glacier national parks. In Glacier National Park the capacity for fish passage above and below each crossing was evaluated for 107 road-stream crossings in 2007, of which 32 were considered likely to support fish passage. In an effort to assess the current state of wildland fire as an ecological process, the Area Burned Condition Class (ABCC) measure is designed to reflect modern-day deviations from historical wildland fire cycles (i.e., frequency). The ABCC was developed as a medium to long term ecological integrity monitoring measure that is fully integrated with the national program of ecological Integrity (EI) indicators, and measures. Whitebark pine is considered a “keystone species” in the mountain national parks, as it plays several important ecological roles where it exists in subalpine environments. Its survival has been threatened by the combined effects of fire suppression, climate change, mountain pine beetle outbreaks and a disease known as white pine blister rust.
