Issue/Question:
Q1 – How is this any different than the information already available and does it add value to Canadians?
Suggested Response:
R.1 - Statistics Canada regularly publishes data, analyses and visualization tools on food prices. The Food Price Data Hub (the Hub) uses existing data from the Agency which has been consolidated into a new, all-in-one tool to make it easier for Canadians to get an overall snapshot of food prices and trends.
For example, Canada is not alone in facing higher food prices, and now, when exploring the hub, Canadians can easily see how food prices in Canada are evolving relative to other economies. Food prices are determined by many factors, and the new hub helps highlight key changes in factors like input costs along the supply chain along with international trade influences.
Over time, new analyses and visualization tools will be added to improve the transparency of the information and help consumers with the purchases they make.
The Hub includes an online tutorial that helps users interpret price data, and a CPI data visualization tool that helps users explore historical price trends and compare recent trends. The hub also allows users to provide their feedback for consideration in future updates.

Additional Information:
• Statistics Canada, in collaboration with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, developed the Food Price Data Hub to help Canadians access the information they need to better understand the current food price fluctuations.
• The hub’s main page prominently features the national average price of selected staple food items as well as the CPI inflation rate for food purchased from stores. For example, it shows the most recent average price of a dozen eggs in Canada along with other price trends along the food supply chain like fertilizer and paperboard containers.
• Statistics Canada will regularly update the hub with the latest data to help Canadians make informed food purchasing decisions.
