Suggested Response:
• The Federal Court of Canada approved the Federal Indian Boarding Homes settlement agreement on December 11, 2023, marking a significant milestone for thousands of Indigenous peoples who suffered cultural loss and abuse while residing in a boarding home placement overseen by the federal government from 1951 to 1992.
• Through this settlement agreement, Canada will provide compensation to thousands of individuals who were placed in a federal boarding home and compensation for incidents of abuse. Our government is also investing $50 million to support commemoration, healing, and the recovery of language and culture.
• The claims process opened on August 21, 2024, and class members have until February 22, 2027 to apply.
