Suggested Response:

• On February 24, 2023, the government signed a Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement with the Métis Nation of Alberta, now known as the Otipemisiwak [Oh-teh-pim-swak] Métis Government, to promote reconciliation and advance their vision for self-determination.
• The Métis Settlements General Council and Fort McKay Métis Nation filed applications for judicial review of this agreement, and in its decision on March 28, 2024, the Federal Court of Canada ruled against elements of it.
• To continue moving forward in partnership, the federal government and the Otipemisiwak [Oh-teh-pim-swak] Métis Government initialed a revised Agreement in March 2025, which will be the subject of an upcoming consultation process with potentially impacted Indigenous groups.

• When Parliament prorogued on January 6, 2025, Bill C-53 died on the Order Paper.
• Canada remains committed to recognizing the Otipemisiwak Métis Government in law and will work with them on a preferred path forward.
• The Agreement signed with the Otipemisiwak [Oh-teh-pim-swak] Métis Government is the culmination of over seven years of collaboration, co-development, and negotiations.
• The Government of Canada is committed to recognizing and affirming the rights of all Indigenous peoples in Canada in an atmosphere of mutual respect, cooperation, and full partnership.
• The Government of Canada will continue to work with all Indigenous partners to advance reconciliation and their vision for self-determination.
