• On February 24, 2023, the federal government signed a Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement with the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan.
• The Agreement focuses on internal matters such as citizenship, leadership selection, and internal operations. It helps to advance reconciliation and the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan’s vision for self-determination.
• The Agreement commits the parties to negotiate toward a future self-governance Treaty, and we remain committed to moving forward in partnership with the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan and to advance their vision for self-determination.

Additional Information:

• When Parliament prorogued on January 6, 2025, Bill C-53 died on the Order Paper.
• Canada remains committed to recognizing the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan in law and will work with them on a preferred path forward.
• The February 2023 Agreement signed with the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan is the culmination of over seven years of collaboration, co-development, and negotiations.
• The Government of Canada is committed to recognizing and affirming the rights of all Indigenous peoples in Canada founded on mutual respect, cooperation, and full partnership.
• The Government of Canada will continue to work with Indigenous partners to advance reconciliation and their vision for self-determination.
• The Government of Canada will continue working with all Métis partners to advance their visions of self-determination, promote reconciliation and build renewed government-to-government relationships. • The government is aware of the statement by the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan released on September 19, 2024.
• The government will be keeping the lines of communications open with all our Métis partners.
