Suggested Response:

• The Government welcomed the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent decision, which provided clarity on the Treaty promise made in the Robinson-Huron Treaty and Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850.
• The Government of Canada is working with First Nation partners to honour our treaty relationships, advance Reconciliation and address past wrongs.

Background:

N/A

Additional Information:

• Canada recognizes that the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision gave the First Nations the option to seek a review by the trial court.
• Canada respects the decision that the Robinson Superior First Nations have made in choosing to seek a review by the court.
• As this matter is before the Courts, Canada is not in a position to comment further on the proceedings at this time.
• Honouring the Treaty relationship and working in partnership with First Nations is key to advancing lasting reconciliation.
• The Government worked closely with the First Nations and Ontario to try to reach a negotiated solution. Unfortunately, the parties could not find the common ground to achieve this goal in the six month timeline provided by the Supreme Court of Canada.
• Canada has informed the 12 Robinson Superior First Nations of the amount that Canada will provide as compensation and is proceeding with the payments. The Government believes the amount represents a fair and just compensation to honour treaty obligations and address past wrongs.
