Suggested Response:
• The Government of Canada remains committed to working with all Métis partners and supporting Métis voices to advance reconciliation.
• Métis internal matters are for Métis leadership, as elected by the Métis people, to determine.
Background:
The disaggregation of the Métis National Council, marked by the withdrawal of three of the five original Governing Members, has created uncertainty around federal engagement with Métis partners. As Minister responsible for advancing reconciliation and supporting distinctions-based approaches, you may be asked how the government is responding to this governance shift and ensuring continued, respectful engagement with all Métis partners.
To support coordinated federal engagement in light of the evolving Métis governance landscape, Crown – Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) is working with federal Métis partners to assess engagement practices and explore future approaches. This includes examining how to maintain respectful, distinctions-based relationships with all Métis partners.
