Suggested Response:

• On February 24, 2023, the Government signed a Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement with the Métis Nation of Alberta, now known as the Otipemisiwak [Oh-teh-pim-swak] Métis Government, to promote reconciliation and advance their vision for self-determination.
• In March 2024, the Federal Court ruled against parts of this agreement following a judicial review application by the Métis Settlements General Council and Fort McKay Métis Nation.
• To continue moving forward in partnership, the Government of Canada and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government initialed a revised Agreement in March 2025, which will be the subject of an upcoming consultation process with potentially impacted Indigenous groups.

• When Parliament prorogued on January 6, 2025, Bill C-53 died on the Order Paper.
• The Government of Canada remains committed to recognizing the Otipemisiwak Métis Government in law and will work with them on a preferred path forward. If pressed on reconciliation
• The Agreement signed with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government is the culmination of over seven years of collaboration, co-development, and negotiations.
• The Government of Canada is committed to recognizing and affirming the rights of all Indigenous peoples in Canada based on mutual respect, cooperation, and full partnership.
