• The Government of Canada welcomed the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent decision, which provided clarity on the Treaty promise made in the Robinson-Huron and Robinson-Superior Treaties of 1850.

Additional Information:

If pressed on the Robinson-Superior Treaty First Nations seeking a review by the Court of the process undertaken by the Crown to engage with the First Nations and of the amount of compensation
• The Government of Canada recognizes that the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision gave First Nations the option to seek a review by the trial court.
• We respect the decision of Robinson Superior Treaty First Nations to seek a review by the court of the compensation we have paid.
• As this matter is before the Courts, we cannot comment further at this time. If pressed on the financial compensation provided to the Robinson-Superior Treaty First Nations in Whitesand
• While we were unable to reach agreement with First Nations while also working closely with Ontario, we informed the 12 First Nations of the amount that would be provided as compensation and have made payments to the Robinson Superior Treaty First Nations.
• The Government of Canada believes the compensation provided is fair and just, and honours our treaty obligation. If pressed on why Canada continues to pay $4 for the Robinson Treaties annuities
• We are committed to fulfilling the treaty promise by updating the Robinson Treaties annuities.
• Further to the Supreme Court decision, we are working with the Robinson Treaties First Nations and Ontario to establish the process.
