Suggested Response:
• On December 17, 2025, Crown – Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) advised the North Slave Métis Alliance that the Government of Canada recognizes their Aboriginal rights, as affirmed under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.
• We are committed to working in collaboration with the North Slave Métis Alliance to further explore how these rights may be clarified and exercised.
• CIRNAC works with all Indigenous groups in the region where there may be overlapping interests identified.
Background:
The North Slave Métis Alliance represents Métis of the Northern region of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The North Slave Métis Alliance is a non-profit society under the Northwest Territories’ Societies Act, and has been since 1996.
The North Slave Métis Alliance's mandate includes: the assertion, protection, and implementation of the Aboriginal rights of the North Slave Métis People; and the exercise of Métis responsibility to protect the environment and to promote and enhance Métis education, economic, social, and cultural development.
The North Slave Métis Alliance submitted a Statement of Claim to Canada requesting a negotiation process for a Comprehensive Land Claim. The submission was shared with the Government of the Northwest Territories. Following recognition of the Aboriginal rights of the North Slave Métis Alliance, federal officials are working with the North Slave Métis Alliance and the Government of the Northwest Territories to further explore how these rights may be clarified and exercised.
