Suggested Response:

• Our Government recognizes the importance of infrastructure and the unique challenges face by Canada’s northern communities in accessing safe, adequate and affordable housing.

• That is why through Budget 2022, our government is proposing to invest $150 million over two years starting in 2022-23 to support affordable housing and infrastructure in the North.
o $60 million to the Government of Nunavut
o $60 million to the Government of the Northwest Territories
o $30 million to the Yukon Government

• This flexible funding will allow our territorial partners to continue to advance their most pressing housing and infrastructure needs immediately.

If pressed on additional infrastructure and housing funding

• Budget 2022 proposes an additional $4 billion over seven years, starting in 2022-23, to Indigenous Services Canada and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada to accelerate work in closing Indigenous housing gaps:
o $2.4 billion over five years to support First Nations housing on reserves
o $565 million over five years to support housing in First Nations Self-Governing and Modern Treaty Holders communities
o $845 million over seven years to support housing in Inuit communities
o $190 million over seven years for housing in Métis communities.
• Our Government through the intergovernmental task-forces will continue to advance solutions and recommendations in response to the critical housing and infrastructure needs of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

• Our Government recognizes the unique challenges that Indigenous peoples face with regards to accessing affordable housing.
• Through Budget 2022 we are proposing to invest $300 million over five years, starting in 2022-23, to co-develop and launch an Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy.
