Suggested Response:
• The government of Canada recognizes the unique challenges faced by Canada’s northern communities in accessing timely, safe, adequate and affordable housing.
• Through Budgets 2021 and 2022, the Government of Canada has provided territorial governments with $200 million to address their critical housing and infrastructure needs.
• Through Budgets 2021,2022 and 2024 the government of Canada is also investing in its northern first nations off-reserve communities in the Northwest Territories and Métis communities in the Northwest Territories by investing an additional $61 million to address housing and infrastructure needs.
• This funding will allow northern Indigenous communities and territorial partners to advance northern focused solutions to pressing housing and infrastructure priorities.

• Budget 2022 invested an additional $4 billion over seven years to accelerate work in closing housing gaps, through coordination with impacted internal and external partners:
o $2.4 billion over five years for First Nations housing on reserves;
o $565 million over five years for housing in Self-Governing and Modern Treaty Holders communities;
o $845 million over seven years for housing in Inuit communities;
o $190 million over seven years for housing in Métis communities.
• To date, the funding has supported over 13,000 home improvement and repairs projects, and more than 4,600 new homes in Indigenous communities.
• Budget 2022 provided $300 million to support housing in urban, rural, and northern Indigenous communities.
• Budget 2023 builds on this initial work with a significant investment of $4 billion over seven years, starting in 2024-25, to implement an Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy with Indigenous partners. This includes a significant investment of $378,309,498 million on a distinctions-basis to support northern rights holders including: Métis communities in the Northwest Territories, Inuit, northern First Nations and northern Modern Treaty Self-governing First Nations.
