Suggested Response:
• Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs (CIRNAC) like all federal departments, is reviewing its expenditures to ensure our spending is responsible, cost-effective and delivers results for Canadians.
• Throughout this process, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs (CIRNAC) remains committed to finding a pathway that balances the need to reduce government spending while also supporting reconciliation and advancing self-determination and self-government for Indigenous Peoples.
• Decisions on these savings will be taken over the next months, and will be included in the Department’s 2026-2027 Main Estimates.
Background:
• The government launched the Comprehensive Expenditure Review in July, requesting departments bring forward savings proposals to spend less on the day-to-day running of government by targeting programs and activities that are underperforming, not core to the federal mandate, duplicative, or misaligned with government priorities.
• All departments, including Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs, have been asked to identify proposals for incremental savings starting in 2026-27, using 7.5% of our 2025-26 Main Estimates budget, and increasing to 15% by 2028-29.
