• The Government is committed to working with Indigenous peoples and territorial governments as we advance our shared priorities.

• The Department of Northern Affairs contributes to this commitment by implementing our treaty obligations in the North, supporting Arctic sovereignty and advancing work to protect the environment and enabling economic prosperity.

• The 2025-26 Main Estimates will provide the Department of Northern Affairs with a total of $1.3 billion in investments to meet its responsibilities. This funding is critical to supporting a strong, sustainable and safe North.

If pressed on NA Expenditures by Type

• The funding under the Northern Affairs portfolio is comprised of $843.3 million in operating expenditures and $465.3 million in transfer payments.

• The majority of the funding will be used:

o For the remediation of Northern Contaminated Sites to address the significant risks they pose to the environment and to human health and safety ($818.1 million); and

o to support accessibility to nutritious food in isolated northern communities through the Nutrition North Program ($208.2 million). If pressed on NA Expenditures by Program

• Of the $1.3 billion in the Main Estimates under the Northern Affairs portfolio, 63% of funding is dedicated to the remediation and management of over 150 contaminated sites across the North.

• 16% of the funding goes to Nutrition North Canada to make nutritious food and essential goods more accessible and affordable in 125 eligible isolated communities.
