Suggested Response:

• As part of a budget review, Crown – Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) conducted a strategic review of expenditures included in its integrated planning based on departmental priorities and identified a number of positions to be eliminated due to the discontinuation of some functions or lack of work.

• CIRNAC is taking the next step in managing departmental budget pressures through Workforce Adjustments.

• Workforce Adjustment is being implemented following several measures aimed at managing voluntary departures, increased control over the filling of vacant positions, internal reassignment of employees to priority areas, and the implementation of other cost-saving measures to ensure the department's efficiency.

• Employees affected by the Workforce Adjustment Process will be provided with information on reassignment opportunities and resources available to support them.

• CIRNAC remains committed to treating all employees with respect, dignity, and transparency throughout this transition.

Background:

Over the past several years, federal departments and agencies have been working to identify and implement cost-saving measures in their organizations. In July, the Deputies informed employees of CIRNAC’s Measures to Manage our Budget Pressures, reducing approximately 40 temporary employment contracts, and is managing attrition strategically to reduce operational costs while maintaining critical areas. Following the release of the Budget on November 4, 2025, CIRNAC has initiated Work Force Adjustment.

Additional Information:

If pressed on the number of employees affected:

• These are positions for which a lack of work has been identified or whose functions have been or will be eliminated.

• Managers have notified most of the employees affected—except those who were unavailable for a meeting—and have offered them support, including reassignment options and next steps.
