Question Period Note: Accelerating Major Projects in the North

• Major projects will help defend, build and transform Canada's Northern and Arctic region.
• That is why on March 12, the Prime Minister referred the Mackenzie Valley Highway, Taltson Hydo Expansion Project, Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, and Grays Bay Road and Port to the Major Projects Office. These projects are necessary for Canada’s Arctic security and economic sovereignty.
• We will continue to work with territorial governments, Indigenous partners, boards, and proponents to build big things while respecting modern treaty commitments and the North’s unique environmental and economic realities.

The Government of Canada has committed to establishing One Canadian Economy and accelerating the development of nation-building projects. A Major Projects Office has been created to lead this work by bringing together project proponents, Indigenous rights-holders, provincial and territorial governments and federal departments. The Prime Minister has referred transformative projects across the North to the Major Projects Office, including the Arctic Economic Security Corridor, Grays Bay Road and Port, Iqaluit Nukkuksautiit Hydro Project, Mackenzie Valley Highway and Taltson Hydro Expansion.
Northern projects are regulated by co-management regimes which implement commitments from Modern Treaties. There are distinct regimes in the Yukon, the Mackenzie Valley area and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region of the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada delivers key programs, such as the Northern Regulatory Initiative and the Northern Participant Funding Program, to support regulatory readiness and enable Indigenous and Northern participation in regulatory processes. Budget 2025 invested an additional $25.5 million to enhance these programs and support the accelerated review of major projects in the North.
