• The Government of Canada welcomed the release of a new draft Nunavut Land Use Plan by the Nunavut Planning Commission in July 2021.
• We continue to support achieving a Land Use Plan that will promote the well-being of Nunavummiut, reflect their priorities and values and provide certainty regarding conservation and development.
• Federal officials will continue to participate as this process moves forward in a way that allows for informed participation of Nunavummiut and incorporates knowledge from Indigenous people, governments, and industry.

Additional Information:

If pressed on funding

• CIRNAC is providing annual core funding to the Planning Commission as well as supplementary funding to support, among other activities, five regional public hearings in support of the land use planning process.

• The development of a Nunavut land use plan must involve communities, governments, Indigenous organizations and, most importantly, the people who live and hunt on the land.

• We will continue to work with the Planning Commission and other parties to ensure that Nunavummiut are meaningfully engaged on the draft plan.
