Issue/Question:

How does the Agency support community organizations through the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program (CVITP in the rest of Canada)

Suggested Response:

• The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Revenu Québec maintain a long tradition of close collaboration. This continues to grow, notably over more than 30 years via the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program (ITAVP).

• The CRA has committed more than 10 million dollars over three years towards a new pilot offering grants to community organizations participating in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) or ITAVP.

• The grant will provide financial support to community organizations that offer free tax clinics through the CVITP and ITAVP.

• The grant program will help organizations offset some of these costs and provide funding for returns filed so they can focus on what they do best – helping people in need.

• Free tax clinics help Canadians who need support to do their taxes to get their benefit and credits.

Background:

Community organizations that participate in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) and the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program (ITAVP) in Quebec are responsible for the costs associated with running a free tax clinic.

The CVITP Grant was announced by the Minister of National Revenue in January 2021. The grant provides financial support to community organizations that offer free tax clinics through the CVITP and ITAVP.
