Issue/Question:
What is the Canada Revenue Agency doing to help those affected by the BC floods?
Suggested Response:
• The flooding in British Columbia is having a devastating impact on many Canadians and businesses.
• The Canada Revenue Agency (Agency) understands that at this time, the safety and well-being of loved ones is the primary concern for
those affected.
• Measures are being put in place to ensure that Canadians facing such extraordinary circumstances will be treated fairly if they are
unable to meet their tax obligations during this time.
• Under taxpayer relief provisions, the Agency has the discretion to cancel or waive penalties or interest, due to circumstances beyond a
taxpayer’s control.
• Those who receive CRA benefits and credit cheques by mail may experience a delay.
• If individuals have internet access, they are encouraged to enroll for direct deposit so they can continue to receive benefits directly to
their accounts. Further information is available on the Agency’s website
Background:
When natural disasters occur, the Agency immediately evaluates the measures that can be taken to help Canadians.
Measure currently being examined include:
• Working with Canada Post to ensure that taxpayers expecting a tax refund or benefit payment have secure access to their mail following
the suspension of delivery. Taxpayers can visit Canada Post service alert webpage for more information:
• suspending some audit and collections activities;
• waiving penalties or interest on some late filed returns or documents and;
• informing taxpayers that they can ask for taxpayer relief if they were prevented from meeting their tax obligations.
