Issue/Question:
Regarding the commitment in Minister Joly's mandate letter to "establish a Canadian centre to expand the availability of Canadian expertise and assistance".
Suggested Response:
• Canada has been a long-time supporter of democratic development around the world, and has committed to establishing a Canadian centre to promote peace, human rights, democracy, and inclusive governance worldwide.
• I have been consulting with experts to solicit their views. I hosted a high-level roundtable in May 2022 with key Canadian stakeholders, and my colleagues, PS Sidhu and PS Vandenbeld, also hosted roundtable discussions with both domestic and global experts.
• Overall, the department has collected nearly 100 [94, exactly] points of feedback through written, formal and informal channels, to inform our way forward on this signature initiative.
• My department and I continue to advance this important project, working closely with civil society partners as the centre is established.
