Question Period Note: Chinese naval base in Cambodia

Several reports that China is building a "secret" naval base in Cambodia.

• Canada values its longstanding relationships and cooperation with our Southeast Asian partners, including Cambodia, where Canada recently re-established a diplomatic office in 2015.
• We are developing a new and integrated strategy for the Indo-Pacific, with a view to intensifying our regional engagement and deepening our partnerships, including in Southeast Asia.
• As we have said before, Canada is concerned about China's aggressive and destabilizing actions in the East and South China Seas, including its militarization of disputed features, and use of naval, coast guard, and maritime militia vessels to threaten the ships of other states.
• We will continue to monitor these developments closely, including any efforts to establish new military facilities in the region.
