Issue/Question:
An April 2022 Amnesty International report has concluded that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committeed in Western Tiray.
Suggested Response:
• Canada is dismayed by reports of crimes against humanity and war crimes in northern Ethiopia, and strongly condemns the ongoing human rights violations and abuses, as well as violations of international humanitarian law being committed by all parties to the conflict.
• Our concerns about violations and abuses of human rights have been raised consistently, bilaterally with Ethiopia by both the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, including five times by the Prime Minister since November 21.
• Canada provided $600,000 to support the joint UN-Ethiopian Human Rights Commission investigation into human rights abuses, completed in August 2021.
• We continue to press for the full implementation by all parties to the conflict of the recommendations therein to support meaningful accountability.
• We have commended the Government of Ethiopia for its establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Taskforce to provide redress for violations and abuses, while continuing to encourage its support for, and cooperation with, independent international investigations.
