Issue/Question:

On March 10, an unarmed missile was launched from Eastern Punjab, and crashed into the city of Mian Channu, Pakistan.

Suggested Response:

• Canada is aware of the reports that a missile from India has landed in Eastern Pakistan
• The Indian Ministry of Defence has issued a statement stating that a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of this missile.
• Canada notes that there has been no loss of life due to the incident.
• For further information, inquiries can be directed to the Indian and Pakistani authorities.

Background:

On Thursday, March 10, Pakistan's military stated that a "high-speed flying object" crashed in the city of Mian Channu, in eastern Punjab, that originated from the northern Indian city of Sirsa, in Haryana state near Delhi. The missile caused damage to some civilian property, but no casualties. Pakistan subsequently lodged their complaints with India's charge d'affaires in Islamabad, calling the incident an unprovoked violation of its airspace. They have further called for an investigation as the event "could have endangered passenger flights and civilian lives".

In a statement by the Indian Ministry of Defence, India admitted that a missile was fired into Pakistan due to a technical malfunction and called the incident "deeply regrettable". The Government of India has ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry into the events.
