Issue/Question:

What Canada is doing in terms of International assistance in Haiti

Suggested Response:

• More than ever, the development of Haiti continues to be a priority for Canada and we are working hand-in-hand with Haitians in order to improve their living conditions.

• Canadian priorities aim at strengthening governance and the rule of law, as well as improving the quality of life of the poorest, in particular women and girls.

• With the current difficult situation in Haiti, we work with all stakeholders to see how Canada's current assistance can contribute to the development and implementation of sustainable solutions

Background:

Canada is the second-largest bilateral donor to Haiti after the United States, and Haiti is the largest recipient of Canadian development assistance in the Americas (about Can$100 M a year in the last few years). Haiti and the international community are counting on Canada's continued engagement to make progress on Haitian reforms and common priorities.

From 2010 to 2018 (Last official numbers) Canada has invested $1.458 B in Haiti, including about $200M in humanitarian aid and $1,257 B in development projects. In addition, in 2019, Canada provided $ 2,200,000 in humanitarian assistance to Haiti to support the establishment of emergency food reserves.

According with Canada's Feminist International Assistance Policy, Canadian programming in Haiti is aligned with the following priorities: gender equality and empowerment of women and girls; human dignity (health, child protection, education and humanitarian aid); growth that works for all and inclusive governance (including peace and security).

The current crisis in Haiti is affecting project implementation, causing some delays. Although stones have been thrown at a project office, no material damage or threat to personal safety was reported. Projects are adjusting their implementation strategies to the changing circumstances to maintain anticipated results while ensuring the safety of their staff.
