Issue/Question:

Forced labour concerns in Xinjiang, specifically related to Canadian companies.

Suggested Response:

• In response to credible reports of human rights abuses and forced labour involving Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities, the Government introduced a suite of measures.
• These measures help mitigate the risk of goods produced in Xinjiang using forced labour from entering Canadian supply chains. They also protect Canadian businesses from becoming unknowingly complicit.
• One measure is the requirement for relevant companies to sign a Xinjiang Integrity Declaration, which acknowledges awareness of the human rights situation in Xinjiang and commits the company to abide by all relevant Canadian and International laws.
• Furthermore, this includes the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises <http://mneguideline If the company refuses to collaborate in good faith, the Trade Commissioner Service will withdraw trade advocacy support and future Export Development Canada financial support.<br /> • Canada has pledged to remove products made with forced labour from global supply chains, and will continue to take the necessary measures in response. This includes working with Canadian companies to ensure they understand supply chain exposure, legal and reputational risks.
