Issue/Question:
Reports cite that Canada is funding Homeopathy in Honduras.
Suggested Response:
• Canada's development asst in Honduras in health seeks to reduce gaps and barriers to women's and girls' sexual and reproductive health and rights. Canada also supports programs to improve the health conditions of the rural population at risk of vector-transmitted diseases
• This funding is in line with the World Health Organization's (WHO) 2014-2023 strategy which aims to assist Member States in implementing action plans that will strengthen the role of traditional and complementary medicine in maintaining the health of their populations
• By responding to the needs and requests of local government authorities responsible for health care in Honduras, the initiative will enable local communities to manage health problems through the professional contribution of qualified Canadian volunteers.
Background:
The project implemented by Terre sans Frontières (TSF) sends health professionals, mainly dentists, optometrists and homeopaths (in Honduras only) to 3 developing countries namely Bolivia, Honduras and Tanzania. TSF signed partnership agreements with Honduran municipalities, which are the government authorities responsible for health care in their areas.
In 2018-2019, TSF sent 6 homeopaths to Honduras. The last volunteer who worked in Honduras in the homeopathic sector completed her term in May 2019. There has been no more volunteer in Honduras and in the homeopathy sector since that date.
The total value of the contribution agreement is 1 154 804$ over 5 years (2015-2020).
