Question Period Note: Russian request to China for military assistance

The U.S. claims that Russia has requested military equipment from China, for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

• Canada took note of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's statement that the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of any country should be respected and safeguarded, and that "Ukraine is no exception."
• China has also called on all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and ensure the safety of Ukraine's nuclear facilities.

• Canadian officials have communicated to Chinese counterparts our expectations that as a Permanent Member of the Security Council, China has a role to play in preventing further deterioration and that to achieve de-escalation, Member States of the UN must be united and clear.
• Canada will continue to call on China to act in accordance with these principles.
• We call on China to play a constructive role in supporting a return to peace and stability in Ukraine and not turn a blind eye to the immense humanitarian and economic cost of this senseless invasion.
