Issue/Question:
A Siemens turbine, necessary for the functioning of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, is unable to return from Canada where it has been for maintainencem due to Western sanctions on Russia.
Suggested Response:
• Western sanctions are not responsible for the disruption of global trade - Russian aggression in Ukraine is. Canada has been working very closely with Germany and its other G7 counterparts to coordinate sanctions against Russia to ensure coherence and impact.
• Canada and its allies, including Germany, unequivocally condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its ongoing breaches of international law.
• Canada is a strong supporter and friend of Germany and understands that Germany has certain energy needs. Moreover, Canada applauds its staunch efforts to reduce and eliminate its dependency on Russian oil and gas.
• As part of our sanctions regime, Canada has various tools, such as exceptions and a permit and certificate process, to mitigate against the unintended consequences of sanctions. We understand that through our sanctions on Russia, our own economies will also feel some effects.
• Canada will continue to maintain pressure on Russia to end its illegal, unprovoked, and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine, including by increasing international pressure on Russia, both politically and through sanctions.
