Issue/Question:
Over 180,000 people have been displaced as violence has re-erupted in the Eastern DRC. The DRC and Rwanda are accusing each other of bombing the other's territory and of supporting enemy rebel groups.
Suggested Response:
• Canada is concerned about the increased violence in the region and encourages the use of diplomatic channels.
• Canada remains committed to supporting the peace processes in the region.
• Canada recognizes that the victims of these types of conflicts are the most vulnerable members of communities and will continue to convey the need to protect civilians.
Background:
Canadian Position
The growing tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, as well as the continuing violence and insecurity in eastern DRC, pose significant threats to the stability of the region. It is vital that history does not repeat itself and that diplomatic channels prevail. Canada will continue to convey the need to protect civilians, respect territorial sovereignty and engage meaningfully in mediation processes.
Canada provided $121,02 millions of development and humanitarian assistance to the DRC in 2020-21.
Global Affairs Canada is following the situation closely.
