Suggested Response:

• The U.S. extradition request for Ms. Meng was dropped more than a year ago, after she reached a deferred prosecution agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice.
• The Government of Canada cannot comment on the deferred prosecution agreement reached between Ms. Meng and the U.S. Department of Justice.
• Canada respected its international legal commitments, including by honouring its extradition treaty with the United States. The rule of law is fundamental to all free societies, and we will continue to defend and uphold this principle.
• As Canada has always maintained, Mr. Kovrig and Mr. Spavor were detained arbitrarily for political leverage and Canada has repeatedly expressed concerns regarding the troubling lack of transparency in their legal processes.
• The solidarity and support, along with sustained pressure generated by our allies, were key to reaching a positive outcome in the cases of Mr. Kovrigand Mr. Spavor.
