Issue/Question:

Canada is deeply concerned with the humanitarian situation in north-east Nigeria.

Suggested Response:

• Canada is working with its humanitarian partners, including UN agencies, the Red Cross, and NGOs, to meet the emergency needs of crisis-affected people in Nigeria.

• Canada's support is helping to provide food, safe water and sanitation, treatment for acute malnutrition and other medical care, and support for livelihoods to vulnerable populations.

• Canada continues to monitor the situation and remains ready to respond further, as appropriate.

Background:

The conflict between Boko Haram and the Nigerian armed forces has devastated communities in northeastern Nigeria, causing widespread forced displacement, abuse, violations of basic human rights, and destruction of civilian property. In 2019, it is estimated that, in the three most crisis-affected states of the northeast, 7.1 million people require humanitarian assistance, of whom 2.7 million are food insecure and 5.2 million are in critical need of protection.

To date in 2019, Canada has allocated $16.15 million in humanitarian assistance to Nigeria [not announced]. This assistance was delivered through the UN, the Red Cross, and NGOs to provide food, safe water, treatment for acute malnutrition and other medical care, and support for livelihoods to vulnerable people. In addition, $1.17 million was allocated for food assistance to northeast Nigeria through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
