Issue/Question:
Canada’s international assistance is addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality and improving the lives of the poorest and most marginalized.
Suggested Response:
• Canada is a global leader in advancing gender equality, including sexual and reproductive health and rights.
• Canada has supported 1500 local women’s rights and LGBTQ+ groups through the Women’s Voice and Leadership Initiative. These groups provide essential services to diverse women and girls in situations of vulnerability and successfully influenced laws and policies for human rights.
• Canada’s investments in global health, nutrition and SRHR are making a difference in the lives of women and girls. In 2021-2022, Canada’s health funding through civil society organizations alone reached over 12 million people through more than 70 projects globally.
• In 2021-22, Canada’s health funding helped prevent 5.4 million unintended pregnancies, and provided vitamin A to 167 million children, preventing over 105,000 child deaths.
• From 2015 to 2021, Canada helped reduce or avoid over 223 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, supporting 8 million people in the most vulnerable countries with increased ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from the effects of climate change.
Background:
Canada has transformed its international assistance to achieve improved results and impact for the poorest and most marginalized around the world. Through the Grants and Contributions Transformation Initiative, Canada is working to revamp, from start to finish, how it manages international assistance grants and contributions. The focus is on creating ways of working that are faster, more transparent and more flexible, enhancing Canada's capacity to deliver results and sustainable impact.
Global Affairs Canada is actively implementing its response to the three recommendations of the Office of the Auditor General report on International Assistance in Support of Gender Equality (March 2023). A Management Action Plan is in place to review the department's current approaches, strengthen corporate tools, update governance mechanisms and find options to better report on Canada's international assistance results.
