Suggested Response:
• As part of our efforts to stop the spread of the virus, the requirement for at-sea observers has been suspended on a temporary basis, until May 17.
• At-sea observers help collect data and information regarding fishing activities onboard vessels, such as gear usage, bycatch levels, and fish size. However, given the nature of their work and the tight confines onboard typical fishing vessels, there are challenges to effectively implement safety guidelines to protect observers and crew from exposure to COVID-19.
• We recognize the unique nature of this situation and are committed to working with industry and partners across government to determine the best path forward given the evolving global response to COVID-19.
